Margaret Alison and the Winter Calms

The Margaret Alison took part in the winter gathering of traditional sailing in the Maresme, organized by El Moll from the Port of Arenys de Mar. Les Minves d’Arenys, initially scheduled for mid-January, were postponed until a date that would truly live up to their name.

The Sant Ramon llaüt from Bricbarca in Vilassar de Mar, the Sant Pau sardinal from A Tot Drap in Sant Pol, the Odina, the falutx from Arenys, and the Simbad sailing boat from El Moll in Arenys all took part in the sail, which took place just off the coast of Arenys from midday until lunchtime.

The Margaret Alison carried a crew of El Moll collaborators and volunteers, who had the opportunity to watch the other sailing boats perform their maneuvers.

The Minves d’Arenys take their name from a local meteorological phenomenon typical of the Catalan coast in winter. The minves de gener (January calms) refer to periods of exceptionally calm seas and clear skies, often accompanied by a noticeable drop in sea level due to high atmospheric pressure. These conditions create ideal opportunities for traditional sailing, which is why this event was named after them.
