The Dock (El Moll)

“El Moll” (which means “the dock” in Catalan) is how the fishermen of Arenys de Mar (Catalonia) refer to their port, where they carry out their trade. Not only fishermen, but also mechanics, carpenters, painters, and many other professionals are contributing to the revival of one of the town’s main economic centers, which has shaped the lifestyle of Arenys de Mar over the centuries.

With “El Moll”, a new project is born with the aim of promoting activities around the port of Arenys de Mar, focusing on education and research into the town’s maritime heritage and nautical history.

El Moll fosters a network of partnerships among individuals, companies, and public entities that coexist in the port of Arenys and along the Costa Barcelona-Maresme, sharing common skills, professional experience, and a passion for the sea and seafaring. Originating from an initial proposal by Classicmar, El Moll is a project that, since 2014, aims to establish the Port of Arenys as a hub for classic boats sailing the Mediterranean. Over time, more ideas have been incorporated, including offices to promote new cultural projects and economic activities related to the maritime world.

These projects progress at different paces, but all are grounded in sustainability, both in terms of funding and future viability. El Moll has set a series of objectives and actions with a clear spirit of innovation, seeking new ways to promote maritime culture, from nautical trades and career development to tourism and cultural services.

El Moll builds partnerships with private and public entities to launch new ideas and integrate more boats into the core of the project. One of the initiatives launched is the Sea’s Classroom, where young apprentices (students from “Els Tres Turons” High School and youth from Arenys de Mar’s City Council employment programs) work alongside retired volunteers experienced in nautical activities to restore the Scottish fishing boat Margaret Alison (1937).
